Japanese Disaster
The massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Honshu in March has had far reaching consequences. The Fukushima nuclear power has taken most of the media attention since the event and this is unfortunate for two reasons.

Firstly, the recovery still needs funds. It is one of the most expensive natural disasters ever.

Secondly, a lot of the reporting has been inaccurate. The extent of the radiation has been felt mostly in the Fukushima area and not in the other areas of Japan. Certainly in Hokkaido there has been no impact. For more information visit our home page.

We have just been dragged kicking and screaming into the social media age. However, it is a great forum for sharing pictures so feel free to join in the conversation and sharing.

Winter 2012 Roundup
It was a superb season for all who joined us over the winter of 2012. It was cold and snowy with everyone getting there fair share of bottomless fluff. We had skiers joining us from all over the world, with our first skiers from Norway and France. All areas produced the goods, with Asahi Dake, Tokachi and Furano being the standouts. Many who joined us got thier first taste of deep powder and others who ski with us regularly got their annual fix of the world's best powder snow. See comments below.

Backcountry Ski Hire in Furano
One thing that stood out last season was the advantage of using the fattest skis you can in the deep powder. I lent skis to several skiers over the season and their skiing skill improved exponentially. So, I have been in the process of setting up a small back country ski hire in Furano. It is not yet finished, as the disaster in Japan has slowed things down a bit but I am hoping to have this setup by this coming winter. The skis that work so well in powder are rarely needed eslewhere and they are expensive, so hiring is the best way to keep your costs down and have maximum fun in the powder. We hope to make an announcement by October this year at the latest.

Feedback from Ski Season 2012
“ I’ve skied extensively in Europe and North America including heli skiing in British Columbia and New Zealand. But never have I experienced snow as light, dry and as deep as we skied in Japan. Thanks John for a great trip. I’m looking forward to doing it again.”
Klaus Tietz (Canberra Australia), Powder Chaser February 2012.

"I want to thank you for a wonderful trip last week. Having known of you and your trips in Japan for some time it was great to finally meet you and have the opportunity to ski with you. Nutappu at Asahidake was a special place - amazing ambience and decor, superb food, excellent hospitality from Napa san and Mariko all set in a great location. One of the best mountain lodges I've stayed in anywhere in the world. Taku was great and I really enjoyed his company. I can't speak highly enough of him as a guide and a person. He is certainly a keeper."
Michael Banks. (Sydney Australia) Asahi Dake & Tokachi January 2012.

"John has unearthed the most reliable, easily accessed and safest powder skiing on earth - combined with wonderful local hospitality and food, hot spring baths and low-key proffessional guides to take care of the details, you have a skiing holiday from heaven."
Tim Macartney_Snape. (Everest summiteer Mittagong Australia) Tokachi Mountains February 2012.
